Meetings

Meetings are held at places of historical interest in North Louisiana, with a speaker on a historical topic. Fall, winter and spring meetings are held annually.

Past Meetings:

Spring Luncheon Meeting, 2011. The Spring Luncheon Meeting of the North Louisiana Historical Association was held on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of Mansfield, Louisiana. Speaker for the occasion was Dr. Laura Lyons McLemore, Head Archivist at LSU-S and the endowed chair of the William B. Wiener, Jr. Professor of Archives and Historic Preservation. Dr. McLemore delivered an interesting and informative talk entitled, “Letters from Land’s End: Ladies Alone in Postbellum Louisiana.”
Following the meeting, members and their guests enjoyed a tour of the nearby Mansfield Female College Museum.

Gay Means, Editor of North Louisiana History, recognized the students receiving the annual Overdyke Awards for Excellence in scholarly writing and research. First place award in the Graduate Division was presented to Benjamin Brad Dison of Louisiana Tech University for his paper, “The Steamboat’s Contribution to the Development of Shreveport’s Railroads, 1840-1890.” His paper was written under the direction of Dr. Elaine Thompson.

In the Undergraduate Division, the First Place winner was Linda Bird of Centenary College of Louisiana for her paper, “Campaigning for Woman’s Suffrage and Beyond in Northwest Louisiana, 1913-1920.” Dr. Samuel C. Shepherd, Jr. of Centenary directed her paper. Second place was won by Jacyln Caplis of Louisiana State University in Shreveport for her paper, “History of South Bossier Parish: The River, the Land and the People.” Her paper was written under the direction of Dr. Gary Joiner.

Receiving the Max Bradbury Award for the best article in North Louisiana History during the preceding year was Rick L. Sherrod for his article, “Simon Manning: Portrait of a Frontier Entrepreneur,” appearing in the Winter/Spring 2010 issue of the Journal.

Winter Meeting, 2011. The Winter Meeting of the North Louisiana Historical Association was held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at the Dorcheat Historical Museum in Minden. Speaker for the occasion was local historian John Agan, whose topic was “Civil War Years in Minden.” Agan’s presentation was based on information contained in his latest book, Echoes of Our Past: The Civil War Years in Minden. Guests enjoyed touring the Museum prior to and following the meeting.

Fall Meeting, 2010. The Fall Meeting of the North Louisiana Historical Association was held on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the R. W. Norton Art Gallery in Shreveport. Speaker for the meeting was William Lane Calloway, historian for Headquarters Eighth Air Force, Barksdale. His presentation, “Barksdale in the Beginning,” was a sponsored event of the Norton Art Gallery’s Saturday Speaker Series. Guests were able to tour the Gallery prior to and following the meeting.
